Abstract

This is a personal obituary of Pierre Liardet (1943–2014), written by his friend, collaborator and colleague Cor Kraaikamp. Rather than a formal biographical account, the author offers a personal recollection of Liardet as a mathematician, medical doctor and friend, recounting their collaboration since 1986, Liardet's doctoral work under Gérard Rauzy on a conjecture of Serge Lang, his subsequent shift to ergodic theory, and his passion for uniform distribution, continued fractions, natural extensions and cryptology. The text also reflects on Liardet's personal character, his intensity and originality, and includes a complete list of his mathematical publications.

Keywords

Pierre Liardet, obituary, ergodic theory, continued fractions, uniform distribution, number theory.
