Edmund Hlawka (1916 - 2009)

This paper is an obituary and tribute to the eminent Austrian mathematician Edmund Hlawka (1916–2009). It traces his education in Vienna, his doctoral work on Diophantine approximation of complex linear forms, and his habilitation thesis solving a classical problem of Minkowski in the geometry of numbers.
