Abstract

This paper is an obituary and tribute to the eminent Austrian mathematician Edmund Hlawka (1916–2009). It traces his education in Vienna, his doctoral work on Diophantine approximation of complex linear forms, and his habilitation thesis solving a classical problem of Minkowski in the geometry of numbers. The article surveys the major results associated with his name, including the Hornich–Hlawka inequality, the Minkowski–Hlawka theorem, the Koksma–Hlawka inequality in uniform distribution theory, and the Korobov–Hlawka method of good lattice points. It also describes his academic career at the University of Vienna and Vienna University of Technology, his influence as a teacher with over 100 doctoral students, and his lasting impact on the development of uniform distribution theory. A complete list of his publications is included.
