The Development of Chinese Fantasy Films Based on the Evolution of Digital Technology: A Study on the Stylistic Transformation of Director Urshan’s Works

Abstract

Under the background of the “Internet+” era, traditional Chinese fantasy films present their breakthroughs, and the continuous collision and fusion of film art and digital technology have inspired the development of new forms of the film industry. This study extracts the narrative elements in director Urshan’s works and constructs a standardised observation matrix, then calculates the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the matrix using the Jacobi method, and then adopts the principal component analysis method to select and visually analyse the key narrative elements. The research results show that the dialogue narrative element in Ghost Blows the Wind of the Dragon Seekers has the highest proportion of 39%. In contrast, the proportion of the three narrative elements of confrontation, fight, memories, and landscape in Beneath the Inhuman is higher. The digital special effects shots account for 85.42%, indicating that director Urshan gradually raises both the special effects technology and the narrative level style in the works of the spectacle film to a new level. This paper analyses Urshan’s directorial work as a stylistic text, providing a powerful reference for exploring the stylistic paradigm of fantasy films suitable for Chinese audiences and even for the world under the evolution of digital technology.
