Abstract

Based on constructivism, blended teaching pays more attention to highlighting the students’ subject position, which is an organic integration of classroom teaching and online learning, and emphasizes the teacher’s leading role in the teaching process and the students’ main role in the English listening and speaking teaching activities at the same time. In this paper, we take the principles of English teaching under constructivism, such as the concept of non-unique knowledge, the concept of active constructive learning, the concept of cooperation between teachers and students, and the concept of twoway interactive teaching, as a guide, and design a hybrid English teaching method of “online + offline” that runs through the stages of pre-class pre-study, classroom teaching, and after-class review. Applied to an English teaching class in a middle school in Guangdong Province, the method had a significant and positive effect on overall English learning motivation, as well as motivation in and out of the classroom. The grades of the experimental class were 15.36 and 17.94 before and after the semester, which were significantly different and better than those of the control class. After the implementation of the online-offline hybrid teaching model, the experimental class improved its English proficiency more than the control class, and the student’s perceptions of the dimensions of interest in learning, learning habits and learning experience were more positive.
